Functional Movement Screen (FMS)

Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is an amazing tool for anyone who wants to achieve peak performance in their sport of choice as well as anyone who wants to move and feel the best they possibly can. FMS is a product of years of innovation and research that starts with monitoring fundamental movement. By screening movement patterns that are key to normal function, you can successfully and quickly identify functional limitations and asymmetries. Basic movement pattern limitations can reduce the effects of functional training and physical conditioning and distort proprioception (body awareness).

FMS will:

  • Identify your physical imbalances or weaknesses and strengthen them with simple corrective exercises;
  • Teach the difference between movement quality and quantity so you can understand how to achieve better results with less apparent effort;
  • Identify your current injury trends as they relate to preventing non-contact injuries;
  • Eliminate your poor movements and quickly, effectively, and efficiently replace them with good movements; and
  • Establish a personal benchmark for your own movement patterns with a clear direction and path to help you be more mobile.

Benefits of FMS

  • Test ability consistently and reliably
  • Easily identifies movement limitations and dysfunctions
  • Improves efficiency, durability, and performance
  • Provides an enhanced foundation for exercise and performance programming

The 7 Tests of the FMS
The screen is comprised of seven fundamental movement patterns that require a balance of mobility and stability and place the individual in extreme positions where weaknesses and imbalances become noticeable.

Deep Squat

Deep Squat

Assess the bilateral, symmetrical, and functional mobility of the hips, knees, and ankles

Hurdle Step

Hurdle Step

Assess the bilateral functional mobility and stability of the hips, knees, and ankles

In-line Lunge

In-Line Lunge

Assess the torso, shoulder, hip, and ankle mobility and stability, and assess quadriceps flexibility and knee stability

Shoulder Mobility

Shoulder Mobility

Assess bilateral shoulder range of motion, combining internal rotation with adduction and external rotation with abduction

Active Straight Leg Raise

Active Straight Leg Raise

Assess active hamstring and gastroc-soleus flexibility while maintaining a stable pelvis and active extension of the opposite leg

Trunk Stability Push Up

Trunk Stability Push Up

Assess trunk stability in the sagittal plane while a symmetrical upper-extremity motion is performed

Rotary Stability

Rotary Stability

Assess multiple-plane trunk stability during a combined upper- and lower-extremity motion
