A Runner’s Streak – 380 Days and Counting!

By Melissa Roy, RRCA Certified Running Coach

I’m omelissa-running4n a running streak. Today, after my midday run, it will be 380 consecutive days of running at least three miles per day, oftentimes more.

Why not?

It started as simply as running easy with a friend on my rest day and then, like Forrest Gump, I just kept running. I wasn’t sure how long I would continue— twenty days? a month? six months? Would I get injured, unmotivated, or lose my hard-earned speed?

The answer has been unequivocally no (and no and no). In fact, I PR’d at a few race distances, cutting minutes off my 5K and 10K personal best times. I began placing in my age group at most distances. Let this sink in—I’m in my late 40’s and have been regularly running since high school. I’ve run decently but I’m not a particularly talented runner.  I’ve learned more about my own running and what it takes to stay motivated during this year long period of daily running than I have in my previous thirty plus years of regular training.melissa-running5

One of my biggest lessons from this, and there are many, is that you do not know what you are capable of until you try. It’s not particularly easy and sometimes it’s not fun (hello…running in the dark and in a cold, driving rain.) but I have never regretted a run and have always, always felt better afterwards.

Would I recommend a running streak? 100%! Absolutely!
